In the last weekend of January 2012, a gathering of seasoned and novice kapa makers came together as a hui of practitioners to share techniques, learn new information, make and renew friendships and of course, pound kapa.

Since the 1960's  Hawaiian kapa has been steadily enjoying a revival as a once 'lost' art.  Today, through the diligent efforts of a relatively few devotees, kapa again commands worldwide attention as it did in the early days of the European voyagers who took it around the globe in the 1700-1800's.

The purpose of this retreat was to help prepare kapa makers for the next big event after the success of the Merrie Monarch Ho`ike in 2011 in Hilo.  A similar performance event which will combine the arts of hula and kapa will happen in 2014 on Maui, and will assemble an even larger number of kapa makers who will once again prepare pa`u, malo and kihei for the dancers.

A number of workshops and discussions were presented and all very engaging.  Different techniques of beating were shared, talks about using sustainable woods for beaters was very well received and of course the ever popular sharing of dyes and dye making filled the weekend.  Held at the Keauhou Outrigger Resort, the kapa makers were well cared for and fed by the excellent staff, and the venue by the ocean was perfect.

As one attendee expressed in their evaluation:

"I certainly added to my experience and now it is up to me to practice new techniques, skills and to gain a level of comfort and incorporate those new things into my repetoire.  I also enjoyed the 'working' atmosphere best.  The sounds of the kuas being beaten as a group is exhilarating."
